Basketball Coach John Wooden: Role Model For Coaches And Parents

UCLA coach John Wooden coached basketball stars such as Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Bill Walton. But it wasn’t just the SUPERSTARS that got his attention.

He gave every member of his teams the guidance and attention which pulled the Bruins together so they could achieve 665 victories and 10 championships!

In 2009 Coach Wooden co-wrote A Game Plan for Life, The Power of Mentoring. In it, he talks about the people who shaped him and his life – the first being his father, Joshua Wooden.

When John completed grade school, he received a two-dollar bill, a small card with a poem on one side and seven rules for living on the other:

1.      Be true to yourself.

2.      Make each day your masterpiece.

3.      Help others.

4.      Drink deeply from good books.

5.      Make friendship a fine art.

6.      Build a shelter against a rainy day.

7.      Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessing every day.

From that gesture, John got a life lesson that shaped the balance of his: he realized the importance of sharing experience with others. He said he realized his father’s main concern was caring for his family, which included raising his children to be the best men they could possibly be – mentoring.

Isn’t that what parents want to do for their children?

It’s supporting them in their endeavors or giving them the tools and equipment they need to grow and develop skills that allow them to be the best they can be in all they do.

Here at the Basketball Goal Store we hear that in parents’ comments and voices all the time.

They contact us saying they want a basketball goal system for their residence, and we hear their stories: it’s for their family – the kids who love the sport; or they want a place to encourage family and friends to convene; or to develop life-long health habits.

And that’s why we sell Goalrilla Basketball Hoops – because it’s a durable, quality basketball hoop that will be the last basketball goal a family would need – every family member from youngster to oldster can enjoy it.

In fact, families can even take it with them when they move … and many do!!

Wooden’s wisdom, which originated with his father, is universal:

Be a mentor, share your wisdom, and raise your children to be the best they can possibly be.
