More than 20 years ago, a slightly more wrinkled but still interested basketball player stepped up to the proverbial free throw line to advocate for all the other wrinkled athletes. This basketball lover’s name was John H. Morgan Jr. And he made history in 1987 by founding The Huntsman World Series Games for athletes over age 50.

That first year, 500 athletes from around the United States happily packed a suitcase and made their way to St. George, Utah to participate. This much interest- especially during the very first gathering- convinced Morgan that he was on the right track. There were more guys like him in the world- guys who still enjoyed challenging themselves physically and mentally, guys who wanted more than a comfy recliner and a big-screen TV.

By 2004, Morgan’s goal for life after 50 had grown to include more than 7,000 over-50 athletes participating in this annual event which is now known as the World Senior Games. Last year, 9,000 athletes from all 50 states as well as a few other countries competed in 22 different choices of sports and events during the World Senior Games.

It just goes to show that you are never too old to dribble a ball, run track, etc. At least you are never too old as long as you look at life through Morgan’s ageless eyes.
