Diet tips for serious basketball players

Basketball is a strenuous activity. Perfecting all the necessary skills- from guarding the opposing team and shooting free throws to controlled dribbling while sprinting down the Goalrilla Basketball Goal court- takes a toll on the body.

As an athlete, it’s crucial to make a commitment to conditioning the body and building stamina. You probably don’t need us here at the Basketball Goal Store to tell you that. No matter how hard you work, you can’t completely develop and perfect your game skills, if your diet is composed of cheese curls, sodas and pizza. To be a serious athlete, you’ve got to eat like one.

Here are some tips you might not know:

 Your diet should be 60 to 65% carbs: Choose whole wheat bread for your sandwiches and whole wheat pasta for spaghetti sauce. Instead of Pop-Tarts, choose a bowl of oatmeal and add some blueberries. Add sweet potatoes, fruits and vegetables as often as possible to help fill your body with strength.

 Your diet should include 15 to 20% fats: Peanut butter is your friend. Smear it on whole wheat bread. Add a couple of handfuls of nuts as an afternoon snack.

 Your diet should include 10 to 15% protein: Instead of a big, greasy burger, choose a chicken sandwich more often. Instead of bologna, choose chicken or turkey. Eat lean beef and low-fat dairy products.

Your diet should be sensitive to sugar and sodium overload: Pass on the cookies and keep your hand out of the potato chip bag as often as you can. Throw some grapes and berries in the family freezer for a while. You’ll be surprised what an awesome snack these make! You can also grab an apple and dip it in peanut butter.

Keep your energy going by mixing great, healthy food choices but avoid overeating: Eat 5 to 7 small meals throughout the day. This eating change also prevents you from possibly overeating before conditioning, practices or games.

Stay hydrated: Drink water throughout the day, not just when you are thirsty! Avoid caffeine and carbonated soft drinks.

Paying close attention to your diet and keeping it healthy will result in faster muscle development, stronger bones and more ability to focus. You’ll think faster on the court and develop lasting athletic skills. So care about what you put in your body. It will make your game a winner!
